>>> 360 NATIONALS | RUTZ CLAIMS WIN

( Aug 2nd 2008 | Trevor Pyle| 11:15am )
Travis Rutz gave up the lead briefly Saturday night in the finale of the 360 Nationals at Skagit Speedway.

Once he got it back, he wasn’t about to give it up again.

After relinquishing the lead for the first seven laps of the race to Cory Chamberlain, Rutz reclaimed it and held off all challengers to claim the A Main and $10,000 purse on the final night of the two-day event.

Rutz became a two-time winner of the event. He also won in 2006.

While Rutz held off the field well, attrition also played a role, with mechanical problems and crashes claiming several of the drivers expected to challenge for the lead.

Seth Bergman crashed in the seventh lap while running third; Danielle Huson, running 11th, was forced to the work area, also in the seventh; and Jayme Barnes, this year’s Dirt Cup champion, saw his evening end with a crash in the 12th.

Burlington’s Nick Engberg, who won Friday’s feature race, was forced out in the 17th.

Rutz held off a late charge from Colton Heath about five laps from the finish to seal the victory. Rutz briefly touched a lapped car, but quickly overcame the slowdown.

The race suffered several collisions and mechanical problems, with the track going yellow five times, red four.

Ten of the 22 cars that started the race finished it.

The win is another feather in Rutz’s cap at Skagit, where he has been the youngest competitor to win a main event; the winner of the Kasey Kahne charity race in 2006; and a 15-time winner in points standings races since 2004.

On Friday, he charged from a 12th-place start in the A Main to a third-place finish. He also posted the fastest time in the A Main hot lap session Saturday.

Heath, Mitch Olson, Willie Croft and Steve Kilcup rounded out the top five in the A Main.

Robby Vaughn claimed the B Main, and eventually turned in a sixth-place finish in the A Main. J.J. Dishneau won the C Main.

>>>19th ANNUAL 360 NATIONALS AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY PREVIEW

< Listen > to a Radio Promotion Preview : MP3 File Format

( July 30th 2008 | Kelly Hart | 4:05pm )
It started out as a race called Thunder In The Valley, back in 1990, a reason to give the 360 Sprint cars a race to call their own. After all, the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup had an eighteen year head start on them at Skagit Speedway. Today it is called the Bob’s Burgers and Brew 360 Nationals and features a $10,000.00 check to the winner and an overall purse to the whole field of $60,000.00. It is one of the highest paying non-sanctioned purses that 360 Sprint Car racers will run for on the West Coast in 2008.

Over the span of those first 18 years, some very popular and famous drivers have etched their name in the Skagit Speedway record books. Previous winners of the event include one of Skagit Speedway’s all-time most winning drivers Marc Huson who won the first event in 1990 and came out of retirement to win it all in 2005. Steve Kent and Jason Solwold are 3-time winners. Rick Fauver and Jay Smith are two-time winners. Some other nationally known drivers such as Roger Crockett, Shane Stewart and Chad Hillier are all winners of the event. Soon to be famous Travis Rutz won in 2006, and other single winners include Jamie Cobby and Bobby Burrow.

This year the only past champions in the field are expected to be Rutz and Rick Fauver. Travis sent a clear message to the field that he is playing to win, as he won both the 360 and Outlaw 410 main event at last weeks Skagit Speedway 2008 Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series event. Fauver recently returned to competition in a new car with a new number F1 but historically is very fast in any car he jumps into.

Rutz will have plenty of contenders to deal with. The Giant Killer Jayme Barnes will try to become the first driver in history to win Dirt Cup and 360 Nationals in the same year. Former 360 Nationals podium finisher and notorious big race competitor Barry Martinez will jump in a 360 Sprint for the first time this year. Two-time defending 360 Sprint Champion Steve Kilcup is in the field and he is also a huge big race competitor.

The field is stacked. There could be as many as 50 cars or more at this year’s event. When all is said and done on Saturday night, someone will be $10,000.00 richer and the race fans will go away pleased at the show they’ve just watched.

This year the 19th annual event is held August 1st and 2nd, this Friday and Saturday. Ticket information and other details for the Bob’s Burgers and Brew 360 Nationals are available online at http://www.SkagitSpeedway.com.

Rutz Victorious in 410 and 360 Skagit Speedway A-Main.

( July 26th 2008 | Kaleb Hart | 11:37pm ) Travis Rutz made the absolute most of round 12 of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Series at Skagit Speedway, winning both the Outlaw 410 Sprint and Budweiser 360 main events. In the Outlaw 410 Sprints, Rutz started 6th and on the initial start put his right rear tire against the turn two wall as he drove around 3 cars to take the third spot. Rutz made quick work of Eric Fisher and set sail for race leader Steve Kilcup. Kilcup seemed to have a car capable of winning, but around lap 16 his nose wing folded up on him, making his front end loose. Rutz saw his opportunity and dove underneath Kilcup on a lap 17 restart to take the lead and the win 8 laps later in his Rudeen Racing #26. Eric Fisher finished second in the J&R Paving #59. Heat race wins went to Barry Martinez in the Artisan Homes #66 and Rutz. Nick Engberg set quick time in the Dri-Eaz #4.

Rutz had things much easier in the Budweiser 360 main. From his pole position, Rutz beat Danny Kirkpatrick into turn one and stretched out to a comfortable lead. Rutz had the hammer down full time, perpetually adding to his lead en route to taking home another big trophy on the night in the Rudeen Racing #26. Cory Chamberlain finished second in the Classic Rock 92.9 #69. Third went to Alan Munn in the Munn Construction #42. Points leader Brian Kirkpatrick had issue in time trials, but recovered nicely in the main racing from 16th to 6th. Heat wins went to Jason Bloodgood in the Big John Motorsports #38 and Munn. Robby Vaughn set quick time. Full Results. Photo Credit: H2H Photo
